SENEHASAKATA ARUTHAK PURAWANTA

Project at Elders Home, Horana.

Saluting elders is an important tradition in every human beings life. But in this cruel world there are certain instances that children find their parents as a burden and make them stay in an elder’s home.

Leos of Horana Metro to further enhance its humanitarian services organized a project at the elder’s Home , Horana on the 25th of January.

It was decided in the board meeting a project for elders should be done and Leo Samith brought up the idea that we should visit an elders home and stay the whole day with them. To put forward the idea some leos went to meet the administration of the Elder’s Home and decided the date as 25th of January. We got to know that there are 40 inmates staying in the elders home.

A programme starting from 3.00p.m. was prepared and leos were there on time. Lion Dr. Vajira Perera inspected the medical needs of the elders and after that the evening bodhi puja was offered to the shrine room in the elders home.

The dinner was donated by some leos and lions.almost all the leos treated the inmates as theor own mother and father. The project was an immense success as at the end of the day we all saw how happy the inmates were.

Leo ADIC drug prevention workshop and sticker campaign

The Project
The Leo Club of Horana Metro in association with the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre Sri Lanka organized a workshop on drug prevention targeting the youth of our community. August being the month with the International Youth Day on the 12th the project was a service project aiming the youth of our country.

The Partners
ADIC is an organization working in the field of drug demand reduction over last 15 years. During this period they have contributed substantially by introducing innovative and scientific based drug demand reduction strategies in Sri Lanka and to other countries especially in SAARC Region. The successful efforts to create a lasting change in communities by changing behaviours has been recognized by the World health Organization in 1993 by awarding ADIC with the prestigious WHO award, “Tobacco or Health Medal”.

The Event

The workshop commenced at 10am of the Saturday morning of 28th August at the Horana Town Hall with the presence of 15 guests from neighbouring schools, the target group of youth, 13 Leos of Horana Metro and a Leo visiting from the Leo Club of Piliyandala as well as 7 Lions of the Lions Club of Horana Metro.
Three very well experienced and trained instructors were there as resource personnel from the ADIC and the workshop started with a session on tobacco, cigarettes and brand promoting schemes of the cigarette companies conducted by Mr Sameera. This most enlightening session was succeeded by a group activity with more emphasis on alcohol and the paradigms that we ourselves have created around alcohol which was very interesting.
As the time flew and when everybody realized that there are initiatives that can be taken into action even by the Leos everybody gathered their courage and wits to carry out a sticker campaign in the neighbouring bus stand of Horana.

The Sticker Campaign
The task assigned was simple. To paste stickers on busses that had a message for all those who consume alcohol to think about. But to step out into the field and to execute it required great enthusiasm and courage. And a little bit of wits to tackle the raised eye-brows of the bus drivers and conductors from who a majority are alcohol consumers. The task was simple yet it carried the message in an attempt to change the attitudes of the youth of our community by the youth taking part in Leoism. It was a good deed to carry out, a challenging one, a good experience and on top of it all, it was fun!

Dengue Awareness Program
This was organised by Leo Club of Horana Metro and Lions Club of Horana Metro.
The procession started at Lion Ajith Ariyarathne’s premises in the town and proceeded around the town demonstrating people about Dengue, the danger of it and the importance of prevention with the aid of placards, slogans. Verbal announcements were made in a musical way so that the attention of the people could be easily taken.
To carry out the project successfully following project committee was established.
Project Chairman - Leo Lochana
Project Committee - Leo Laksri
Leo Chalitha
Leo Lochana was very much successful in her task and she worked hand in hand with the Lions club Secretary Lion Harsha Kumbukage and also the 15 Lions Club members who were present. (Please refer the registration forms on the Lions Clubs of Horana Metro’s Secretary’s report for the month of August)
Short street play displayed by Leos how dangerous dengue is and displayed the message to the audience interestingly enhancing an understanding in them about the activities of the dengue mosquito.
Leaflets and brochures were distributed among the people who were gathered in the town. Later the procession moved to the Sunday pola where PHI officers and some other health sector officers joined with Leos and Lions to make people understand the true value of preventing such disease.

Seth Pathamu Meth Wadamu

In the Sri Lankan context whenever something is initiated it is the tradition to observe religious activities wishing for best of luck for that activity or event.
The new fiscal year of the Leo Club of Horana Metro was started with a bodhi pooja at the Vidyarathne Temple Horana on the 26th of July with the participation of 8 members.
Few days after the club installation ceremony the club members got together in a fine evening with nothing but good thoughts in their mind wishing for a good year to come by where each and every wish of the members would receive the blessings of the triple gems.
The bodhi pooja was organized not only to commemorate the start of the new fiscal year but also to remember the war heroes who gave their lives for our futures as well as to bless all family members and friends of the club members and our community.
After the religious activities were done advices were given by the Venerable Thero present there which gave all members courage and confidence for a better tomorrow starting from that day.

Trees For Tomorrow
In commemorating the International Tree Planting Day held on 17th September the Leos of Horana Metro decided to hold a tree planning project.
After much consideration it was decided to hold this project at the Elders’ Home of Horana on the 18th (Saturday) of September 2010 at 9.30am to 11.30am. Reason behind this was to give the poor elders at the Elder’s Home a chance of recognition and something to care and look after in their time there.
Lions Cabinet Officer Lion Piyathilaka Dandeniya came up with his helping hand as always giving us all the help we need by supplying all the plants (mango, jack fruit and mahogany) making the project a dream come true for the Leos of Horana Metro.
The day before the project and on the actual Tree Planting Day the Leos got together and went to the Elders’ Home and had a shramadana campaign in preparation for the tree planting. And the pits for the plants were made.
In which on the next morning the first of the plants were planted by the Chief Guest for the occasion Lion Piyathilaka Dandeniya and Leo club president Leo Hiranya Perera. About twelve mango, mahogany and jack fruit plants were planted in the premises. Furthermore jack fruit plants were gifted for all the Leos present at the project to be taken home and planted there.
Many distinguished guests were present for the occasion and the efforts of the Leos towards the elders as well as the environment as the youth of the community. A special letter was given by the warden of the Elders’ Home Mr GDL Gunawargena of the Raigam Korala Social Service Society recognizing the efforts of the Leo Club of Horana Metro at the ceremonial procession which was followed by the planting of trees.

01. PROJECT FOR ELDERS.

The idea was put forward in a Board Meeting that a project for elders should be done regarding the home for elderly in Horana. After giving it much thought we delegated its responsibility to some of our members. So finally we identified the following group as the project committee. Leo Laksri was the project chairman with the members; Leo Poorni and Leo Sandun.

After confirming a date with the Elders home they planned everything for the success of the project. We thought of serving the elders with their dinner and all the food was donated by our Leo Advisor Lion Dr. Vajira Perera.

Then to further enhance the capabilities of our club we decided to organize a medical campaign, as we heard from the management that they are in need of a medical clinic. So we organized a medical clinic for all the elders.

The necessary drugs and equipments were supplied by our parents Lions Club. Then the next problem we faced was we didn’t have any medical practitioners who can come and help us with this project. To our great relief Lion Dr. Deepal Fernando and Lion Lady Dr. Renuka Hewawasam told us that they will join their hands with us.

It should be noted that the project was a great success and all the elders were very happy because they had a great time with us.

02. DISTRIBUTION OF LUNCH PACKETS TO THE BEGGAR.

As a matter of fact this idea was given by a very young leo, Leo Barana Chandima at the General Meeting held at leo Laksri ‘s place. And as it was not that hard to implement such a project we thought of delegating it to the young leos who are still schooling.

Leo Barana, the project chairman could achieve a valuable target with the helping hand of Leo Achintha, Leo Chethika, Leo Hasitha and Leo Rakitha as the project committee.

We appointed Leo Anuradha to overlook at the way their performing the project. So at the end they have decided to distribute around 50 lunch packets.

This was supplied by all of us voluntarily. Then they decided a date and after some review they thought of distribute the packets to all the beggars in the streets of Horana. The project was an immense success and we all were so happy because this project gave us the opportunity to realize the real strength of our young leos.
